There are few entertainment franchises that have the multi-generational appeal of Star Wars. Thanks to the recent completion of the Skywalker Saga with 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, and numerous Star Wars shows on Disney+ (including the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi), Lucasfilm’s 1977 space epic is as hot as ever.
Its intersection with gaming also remains incredibly fertile, as Warner Bros.’ Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga sold 3.2 million units in its first two weeks, exceeding sales for all previous Lego video game launches. Moreover, renowned creative and Naughty Dog veteran Amy Hennig (Uncharted) is now leading a brand-new narrative-driven Star Wars action title for Skydance New Media.
And that’s just the beginning for fans of Star Wars gaming, as there are a total of six new games currently in development (including the Skydance title). Respawn Entertainment (Apex Legends, Titanfall) is working on three games: a sequel to the 2019 hit Jedi Fallen Order, a new first-person shooter with the producer of the original Star Wars: Battlefront, Steve Hirschmann, and a strategy game in partnership with new AAA studio Bit Reactor (which is composed of veterans of XCOM and Civilization). There’s also Star Wars: Eclipse from narrative-focused studio Quantic Dream, a remake of BioWare’s classic Knights of the Old Republic RPG from Aspyr, and an open-world Star Wars title from Ubisoft Massive (Tom Clancy’s The Division).
Release dates for the six projects are not yet finalized, but the number of games and breadth of genres that they represent is a testament to the power of the Star Wars brand and the rich universe it offers fans. In fact, Interpret’s New Media Measure® shows that Star Wars fanship in the US exceeds numerous other top entertainment properties, including Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. Fanship among gamers is also very high but the franchise does sit behind gaming-first properties like The Witcher and Pokémon.
